SECONDARY NETWORKS WERE LOWER BUT PUNKY STILL CAME OUT ON TOP

On this second day of the secondary broadcast networks daily ratings battles we had Punky win the second straight day in a row as AJC is still looking for their first win as a network. Obviously with yesterday being the first day and the schedules more aggressive yesterday because of that we had a lowered day as it was full of mostly repeats and barely any original programming on either schedule.

What we found on Thursday is that between both networks was Punky and AJC in daytime were pretty low and the ratings improved greatly in both primetime and late night. We've already seen a trend where late night programming has rated highly so both networks are taking advantage of the absent competition from the big 3 networks after primetime since those networks typically do not program original programming in those overnight hours. Also as Jill Nicolini from WPIX-11 in New York explained to us earlier today on her new national show she explained that overseas markets in Asia and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand) are watching NITRO Television during those hours and these networks are now their only option during the week.

Punky had stronger numbers for their repeats in the morning and from a marathon of Beverly Hills, 90210 celebrating the 28th anniversary of the show's premiere on this date in 1990. The movies were doing pretty well too as we noticed AJC did better with their movies than anything else they aired but the network's owner and programmer Alex Juarez said that AJC is just testing stuff out.

Primetime was way more competitive between the two networks as a couple of repeats of the popular Reba McEntire self-titled comedy Reba did AJC's best numbers of the day getting over 11 million viewers which was enough to beat Friday the 13th's fourth movie in that franchise The Final Chapter. Jason Voorhees would control the rest of the night for Punky though.

Late night we continue to see high ratings at the start as both Staying Alive and The House That Love Built did big numbers. A good sign for ICE and NBC is that Teen Athlete repeated well for Punky and Seattle Mysteries repeated decently for AJC. Both shows struggled in their ratings in primetime on Thursday night on the main networks.

Literally, the only original program that aired on either network was Jordache Jeans Shopping Network's Fashion's Night In which made its network premiere on Punky and it got huge numbers with 14 million viewers in late night hours. That was enough to provide a good lead-in for Final Destination 2 to hold off the two AJC movies as the 2001 feature film thriller Joy Ride did surprisingly well and had the second-highest ratings of the day for AJC.

The Shopping channel numbers are next and the next secondary broadcast ratings will include double days (Thursday & Friday) as they will be out after Friday's primetime ratings. Jill Nicolini will analyze those numbers for you guys from her show on Saturday. Also, be on the lookout for ICE's streaming numbers from Punky Power as well.


Tomorrow we expect the bigger ratings to return as it's another Kelly Green Friday for ICE so they'll have a lot more original programming on the schedule so we'll see how their ratings compare to Wednesday which averaged over 10 million viewers and we'll see if AJC can get back closer to 5 million viewers on average like they did on Wednesday. It should be also interesting to see if AJC lost to GJSC again today when the shopping numbers are released.

Reba did surprisingly super well for AJC that was one of the strongest repeat numbers I've ever seen on NITRO Television from a non-NITRO produced program so even though AJC is off to a miserable start in these ratings they at least accomplished that feat. AJC does seem to be doing well in late night though.

Punky is getting more out of their repeats early on than AJC and I think as long as they can stay above 5 million viewers on average everyday they'll be okay.

The shopping networks seem to be doing better overall than these two streaming networks.

Punky seems to be ahead of AJC right now even with a full repeat day like they had

outside of Reba repeats, AJC did not have a good day at all
