This was created to give networks a full evaluation of where their soaps are at four weeks before November Sweeps and to see if any changes need to be made to the soaps themselves like beefed up casting or any schedule changes or cancellations. Since we got NBC's The Music Box Killer coming in on Monday October 22nd, 2018 I think this was a great chance to see where things are right now.
When it comes to the overall rankings amongst all 14 soaps we see that ICE is running away with being the most watched soap network in NITRO as their soaps are averaging anywhere between 25-60 million viewers each day. They've been able to establish themselves as the gold standard soap network right now but they are planning on making a couple of changes to that lineup this season despite their early season success. ROD sits right in the middle but NBC is making changes as we speak to catch up to ROD for 2nd place and ROD is catchable since they don't have a single soap averaging more than 30 million viewers each day. NBC has Drama's Place which on most days is the 6th or 7th highest rated soap on the air. The House That Love Built is in 13th place right now but they're making changes to that cast including a brief run by Barbara Shields on the soap starting this Thursday. Maybe she becomes a regular on there if the ratings improve while she's on there in the next few episodes.
Within each network starting with ICE, their huge difference maker comes from Staying Alive which features Strawberry Shields and Shawn Travolta in the lead roles in the remake of the 1983 theatrical Staying Alive which was a sequel to Saturday Night Fever starring Shawn's distant cousin John Travolta. Since Staying Alive has debut it has taken the soap opera genre in NITRO to new heights and has lifted Youthful Daydreamers which used to be the top soap in NITRO and was the top soap in daytime back in 2013. Another World was beefed up by Vika Bronova but was already rock solid with Nicole Meyer, Theresa Bush, and Victoria Konefal on that cast and with Vika leaving it will be tested to see if it can keep its slot in the lineup or get moved to Punky. All My Children is related to a number of soaps and has had help in the past from crossover characters and has another big crossover with Who Wanted Nichole Dead, Sheila Carter, Quinn Fuller, and Steffy Forrester coming up in November for that upcoming sweeps period. AMC is ICE's lone morning soap as it's the first soap to air in their Love in the Afternoon lineup. Both Another World and All My Children were soap reboots as Another World aired on NBC from 1964-1999 while All My Children aired on ABC from 1970-2011. Star 80 is the network's least watched soap but is boosted somedays by its lead-ins. Star 80 has already been confirmed by ICE that it will be moving over to Punky starting in November as the soap was originally made as a vehicle for Victoria Justice who left ICE before this season for NBC.
ROD has a solid soap lineup that's been good enough to get them to finish up in 2nd place but the soaps are also stuck in mediocrity because none of them are blockbuster soaps that can compete with any of the ICE soaps. The top 3 soaps change on a daily basis but most days this season their top soap has been Sunset Beach and with The Music Box Killer soon coming to compete against it in that slot it could be seeing the end of its days as ROD's top soap unless a big casting decision is made. LA Passions is their 2nd highest rated soap and this soap has the most potential to breakout eventually. Ain't No Mountain High Enough hasn't quite lived up to the billing as the next Young and the Restless but it's still been a solid performer for them in a competitive timeslot. The two morning twin soaps As the World Turns and Guiding Light are very close to each other in ratings are staying above that Mendoza Line but can be replaced at anytime too as Lucy Hale has stated that the network will never carry more than 5-6 daytime soaps as they're likely to move a soap to their new secondary network in the future. Sunset Beach, As the World Turns, and Guiding Light are all soap reboots as Sunset Beach aired on NBC from 1997-1999 while As the World Turns aired on CBS from 1956-2010 and Guiding Light which first aired on radio and was the longest running American soap opera and it aired on CBS from 1952-2009.
NBC has a fast growing soap lineup that struggled in 2013 but has picked it up lately thanks to Drama's Place growth and is adding The Music Box Killer to take it to the next level. NBC until The Music Box Killer comes in only carries four daytime soaps currently while the other two networks carry at least five soaps. Drama's Place got a couple of big boosts behind Sunday Night Football these past couple of weeks to help it grow and that helped boost Fashion House behind it. Drama's Place is currently the only non-ICE soap to touch 30 million viewers this season. Fashion House which sits right behind it has piggy backed off of Drama's Place performances to be the network's 2nd place soap opera. The House That Love Built sits in 3rd on the network and has been going through some casting changes lately and as we mentioned before Barbara Shields will do a small story arc on there to boost the numbers and if it works it could take the soap to the next level. Sex, Lives, and The Southern Belle is their last place soap opera but it's not performing terribly by soap opera standards but it's a soap that will need to turn it around as all of the soaps continue to grow this season. What's interesting this season is that we're finally going to get a full season for the first time since NITRO's inaugural season back in 2009-10 so we'll be able to see a full growth like we've never seen before so it should be interesting to see where each soap that lasts that long is at by the 2019 November Sweeps period.
