TEAM ICE PREPARES FOR BOTNS BY PLAYING REAL GAMES AGAINST HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
This season on Team ICE you will be able to watch all of your favorite young ICE actors compete against high school teams from the Toronto area. Team ICE will represent East York Secondary Academy in these battles in a season-long tournament. Over the past couple of years while NITRO has been out Paige Van Buren and other staff members have been getting together with the TDSSAA to put together a league featuring public school students who would like to compete in various sports against other high schools during the school year. Most of these students have been using their summers to get ready for this season as the league will only play on Tuesday nights allowing students to only commit to staying out late to play in these games just once a week just like ICE who can only commit to a single night of the week to compete in a league like this with other responsibilities during the rest of the week.
Four other school districts out of Chicago, Detroit, Norwood, and New York will all reportedly experiment with this league this season to see how it turns out and there will be an end of the season tournament where these schools will travel to meet the best of the best. Team ICE will see at least one school from each district during the season at some point before the playoffs start but a majority of their games will be against other Toronto schools. The season will be broken up into two different seasons with the first being a fall/winter season and with the second season being a little bit shorter and being called a spring season.
All of the home games will be played either at the athletic facilities located at East York Secondary Academy, Paramount Hall, or Rogers Centre after the Toronto Blue Jays season ends in late September. Construction has started on the expansion and remodeling of East York Secondary Academy and it will include a new 40,000 seat football stadium that will open in time for the summer of 2020. The current football field only holds 2,000 people so these will be small atmosphere games and Paige Van Buren wants to play the games at Rogers Centre once the weather cools down in October as Rogers Centre is only a few blocks away from East York Secondary Academy. There will be road games where the team travels to other high schools to compete. We'll have the fall/winter season schedule posted below for you guys to look at and see how it works as the inaugural season launches on Wednesday, September 5, 2018, which is also NITRO's opening day of action.
Norwood Public Schools (NPS) Superintendent Lance Stallworth sees this as an opportunity to get some of his kids off the street and improve the school's dropout rate as his school system was ranked as the worst school system in all of Canada and Norwood has had a tremendous amount of gangs that have started as Norwood is huge on Sallies gangs. The hope is that kids in the system will stay off the streets by joining the teams in this league. Same thing at East York Secondary Academy which has gone from one of the best schools in North America to one of the worst schools in the continent ever since the ICE Phederation brought the high school back in 2012.
Every week the same sports that Team ICE competes in for BOTNS is what they'll compete in on episodes of Team ICE this year as coverage will actually start in the early evening hours of the daytime window starting at 6pm with an intermission break at 7:30pm leading into the primetime window at 8pm through 10pm. The daytime window will feature a wide variety of sports while the primetime window will be mainly football so all in all like 4 hours of action.
New head coach Paige Van Buren sees this as a great opportunity to get her team ready for BOTNS and the Summer Athletic Games in 2020 and also keep the girls loose on their scheduled weekly off-days from the WFL.
No word just yet if Team ROD, Team RTN, or Team SBC will do something similar in their cities this season or in future seasons. Team RTN is in Chicago where they can work with the Chicago Public Schools system and IHSA to schedule games.
